The Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), the peak IT body in Australia, has welcomed the interim guidance provided by the federal government on the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The guidance, developed by the Digital Transformation Agency and the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, advises public servants on the responsible use of AI tools for service delivery and decision-making. However, the AIIA has called for a more comprehensive and mandatory AI framework specifically for agencies involved in citizen-facing services. The AIIA urges the government to develop a detailed and compulsory governance framework to ensure the safe and principled adoption of AI in government organizations. The AIIA’s call for a mandatory framework comes in light of the need for safeguards, governance, and transparency in the wake of the robodebt controversy.
