The Department of Internal Affairs, in collaboration with Statistics NZ and the National Cyber Security Centre, has released guidance on Generative AI use in the public sector. The guidance aims to provide “guardrails” for public sector agencies when using Generative AI, outlining its benefits and key risks while making recommendations for its use. Key points from the guidance include developing AI/Generative AI policies and standards, identifying privacy risks, understanding limitations, conducting testing and assurance processes, involving Iwi Māori when applicable, ensuring human oversight, transparency, and adhering to government procurement rules. This guidance is relevant to both the public and private sectors as it covers essential considerations when using Generative AI.
